Elementary School Safety
As parents and caregivers we are constantly worrying about all of the aspects of our children's lives and especially about child safety. Whether we are away all day at work or home to greet them when they arrive, each child should know about the threat of abduction and what they can do to keep away from potential kidnappers.
Knowledge is power
The key to elementary school safety for our children in that age group is preparedness. Of course it is not a very comforting thought to know that there are people out there who have made it their primary goal to hurt children, but they do exist whether we talk about them or not. S, we owe it to our elementary aged children to inform them about the possible risks to their elementary school safety. We do not want to scare them into such a fright that they no longer wish to go outside, but we do want them to be aware of the danger. When they are aware they will be better able to avoid these situations and will be more open to the elementary school safety tips that you share with them.
There are many simple things that we can do to protect our children from abduction, but it takes teamwork and you and your children need to work together. Here are a few things that every elementary aged child should know and do to ensure elementary school safety both at school and at home:
- Know where they are at all times. Make sure they understand that they do not go anywhere with anyone without asking you first.
- They should know the full names of their parents as well as their phone number and address.
- Tell them that when they are away from you and with friends that they should all stick together and not get separated from the group.
- Teach them what o do if they get separated from you in a public place (i.e. go to someone that works there and let them know).
- Make your home and your relation ship with your child an open one where anything can be discussed.
- Stay away from strangers, even if you have seen them around and their face is familiar - children should know not to go near them.
- If they do get approached by a stranger make sure that they know not to approach the car or the person and that they can say something without getting too close.
Even a few elementary school safety tips can help to save a child's life. Any school safety checklist should also include checking with the local police to find out if there are any sexual offenders in the are where your child attends school or plays.
