High School Safety
Bullying is an increasing threat to school safety. We hear more and more about it in the news each year and it is no longer a quite problem that we once thought simply went hand-in-hand with going to school. Bullying not only undermines high school safety, it can also have some devastating effects on the victim or child that is being bullied. Many kids are pressured not to tell their parents or teachers about the problem and will try to keep it a secret, but with your help as parents and caregivers high school safety can remain in place.
Start from the beginning
It would be great if our children told us everything, but especially when they get to high school age, that is more and more a fantasy. Peer pressure is at its most intense during the teenage years and many kids feel as though they are a rat if they try and get help or relief from bullying. Start by being an involved parent, one that is not only concerned about what is going on at your child's school, but also one that is truly interested. At the beginning of the year, go over all of the school rules with your child, that way there are no excuses later on and they will have a better idea of what the school expects of them and what types of action are taken in cases such as bullying.
Many children that are victims of bullying are totally unaware that there may be high school safety rules in place already to protect them. Knowing all of the high school safety rules will give any student more power and confidence that they can then use later on in the event that something like bullying does take place. Many kids will still keep it a secret though, that's why it is important for us to monitor changes in behavior. This can be very tricky with teenagers, who are already world-renowned mood swingers. So foster an environment in your home that welcomes all discussions. Let your child know that there is nothing that cannot be discussed - this is key to all areas of child safety. High school safety does come with a whole new set of rules and situations that you may not have been exposed to before, learn and grow along with your child.
