Fire Safety For Kids
Fire safety week is October 9-15, 2005. Are your family's fire safety measures in place?
Fire Safety for Kids and the Whole Family
There is one main thing that fire safety experts know happens when there is a house fire--the occupants will usually panic. And panicking can only make the situation worse. But much of that problem can be alleviated if the family has a clear plan that has been discussed and reviewed by all members of the family. Fire safety for kids entails a few things specific to their age group that might not be considered by most adults, so it is important to talk at their level and not hold back. The more a child knows about fire safety for kids the more likely they are to be less afraid and more calm in an emergency situation.
Have an Escape Plan
The adults in the house should confer with the fire safety experts in their community to get some fire safety tips that would best be employed in their home. This should include some advice as to the best route of escape for all members of the family in the event of a fire. Most of the occupants in the home will be coming from various locations, as each generally has their own room. Each person should know the ideal route that they themselves should take to most quickly and safely get out of the house. Fire safety for kids will also be discussed at school, but the topic will be only covered in a general way and the real crux of the plans should be implemented at home.
Once the routes have been determined it is a very good idea to make sure that each child understands where to go. Fire safety for kids can only be ensured when the child is clear about what is expected of them when and if a fire starts in the home. Go through a few practice "escapes" so that everyone feels comfortable with their responsibilities. Make it a habit of periodically having these practices so that it becomes second nature. This is a great fire safety tip that will ensure fire safety for kids !
