Fire Safety Measures

Fire safety measures can save lives. Here are some fire safety measures for you to take.

Fire Safety Measures For The Home

It happens all the time. People follow safety instructions only to find out that nothing would have happened if they hadn't made that extra effort. But when it comes to fire safety, taking the appropriate fire safety measures now could keep your family safe--and prevent you from watching your money go up in smoke--later.

Fire Safety Measures at Home

Your home is your most important investment. Keep it safe from fire by following these fire safety measures:

  1. Have at least two working smoke detectors in your house. If you have a multi-level house, make sure there's one on each level. Ideally, have one in each room of your house.
  2. Don't leave candles burning unattended.
  3. Don't smoke in the house. (Don't smoke at all, for that matter. Not smoking prevents more than fire--lung disease, cancer, etc.)
  4. Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. It's also good to keep one in the garage.
  5. Make sure upper-level bedrooms have a fire escape ladder.
  6. Make sure your family has fire escape plans. Having more than one is crucial--if the plan is to meet at the front door, but fire is blocking someone's path, that person will need to know how to get out of the house another way.
  7. Keep small children out of the kitchen when cooking.

Other Fire Safety Measures

You may know a little more about fire safety measures at home than you do when you're camping or outside, because as we mentioned before, your home is your most valuable asset. You're more likely to take care of it. But there are a lot of other fire safety measures you should know about, some of which are related to your home, others that aren't. Since October 9-15, 2005, is National Fire Safety Week, it's a good opportunity to learn more. Stop by your local fire house to learn about candle safety (the theme of this year's National Fire Safety Week), BBQ safety, campfire safety and other fire safety measures that can save your life and the lives of others.
