Do you know all you need to know when it comes to fire safety measures and keeping your family safe in the event of a fire? Fire safety week is October 9-15, 2005. What better time to learn? Review these fire safety tips to find out if you know all you think you need to know . Most of these fire safety tips are to help you prevent fires (after all, prevention is half the battle) but some tell you what you should do in the event of a fire.
- Have at least two working smoke detectors. It's preferable to have one on each level of your house, as well as one in each room of your house. This is, perhaps the most important fire safety tip.
- Don't overload outlets
- If you use a space heater, keep all objects at least three feet away from it
- If you use a fireplace, make sure the flew is open before you start the fire. Also, keep your chimney clean.
- Don't put metal in the microwave
- Don't leave candles burning unattended
- Don't let small children play with matches, and keep them away from candles
- If you must smoke, don't smoke in bed
- Make sure upstairs bedrooms have portable fire escape ladders that can be secured in a window then thrown out the window to escape from a burning house
- Keep a fire extinguisher in the house
- Keep a bell and a flashlight in each bedroom to alert firemen of someone's presence in a room in the event of a fire
- Have a family meeting to discuss escape routes and a safe meeting spot in the event of a fire. For example, agree to meet at the edge of the driveway.
Fire Safety Tips for the 4th of July
The 4th of July holiday was just a few months ago, so it'll be awhile before most of us will be shooting fireworks again. In any case, knowing fire safety tips for fireworks is key. Some of the following tips may surprise you. For instance, did you know that sparklers cause the most accidents on this holiday? Shocking isn't it? Here are some fire safety tips for a safe holiday:
- Make sure a sober, responsible adult is in charge
- Wear protective glasses if you're the one shooting off the fireworks
- Keep a bucket of water nearby in case you need to put out a fire
- Only light one firework at a time, then move away from it quickly after you light it
- Don't try to re-light or examine fireworks that don't go off
