Backyard Safety Products
Do you know what backyard safety products are good to have?
Fun in the Backyard
To a child, this can mean a swing set, a trampoline, a pool, a treehouse or even a sandbox. When you're buying any of these things, your child's happiness (and possible surprise) is what you have in mind. But what you should also be concerned with is backyard safety.
There are lots of backyard safety tips to keep in mind when you're considering any of these fun backyard toys, and sometimes there are even some backyard safety products you can buy to ensure the safety of the equipment or toys. For instance:
- Any swing sets should have 10-12 inches of soft material underneath it like mulch or shredded tires. This type of backyard safety product greatly reduces the instance of broken bones should a child jump or fall off a swing set or trampoline.
- Make sure that there are no openings in a swing set or tree house (or any other toy, for that matter) where a child could become entangled.
- Make sure the equipment or toys you buy are age appropriate. If you have to lift your child up to use the equipment, the child is probably still too young to be playing on it.
- Be sure to fence your yard in to keep your children in and intruders out.
- Check equipment occasionally to make sure it's not worn or unstable.
Of course, if you have a pool there are a whole set of backyard safety products you need, such as a pool fence, life jackets and other life-saving devices. Pool alarms are also good backyard safety products. This is mainly to alert you when someone is entering the pool area. We know you would never allow your small children to be near the pool when you aren't there to supervise, so when your kids are in the house and your pool alarm goes off, you may have uninvited guests who could get hurt in your pool. Not only would you feel terrible, but you could also be held liable. Pool alarms are also great when you're busy in the house and you think your kids are playing inside, but then they might wander into the pool area. This will let you know.
I've Been Working in the Backyard
(Sing that to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad.") Okay, maybe that's a stretch. But if you're working in the backyard, particularly if you're mowing, working with lawn chemicals or working with sharp objects, be sure to keep your kids inside while you're doing it. There are a lot of safety concerns with mowing as it is, and if you have to watch for small children getting too close to the mower, it only distracts you and raises the risk for accidents.
On that note, you also want to be sure to keep sharp or dangerous equipment (like garden tools, saws, grills, etc.) away from or out of reach of children. No backyard safety products can replace adult supervision. It's the best home safety product you can get.
