Backyard Safety
If you have a home with a backyard as well as a few children running around, odds are those kids are spending much of that time playing in the backyard. It is up to us to make our yards as safe for our children as we possibly can, and that means learning about all of the backyard safety issues that pertain to us--possibly even buying a backyard safety product or two. Different age groups and parts of the country will call for different backyard safety measures.
Backyard Safety for Children
Here are a few backyard safety and home safety tips that we have found to be very helpful. The first step in ensuring your own family's backyard safety is to do a thorough walk-through of the lawn in order to assess any hazards that are there:
- Store all tools properly in a shed that cannot be entered by the children. (It is best to put a good lock on any shed that houses all of the tools and lawnmowers.)
- Stack plastic chairs in a corner of the deck or yard. Plastic chairs are very easy to tip when a child stands or kneels on them.
- Know about the poisonous animals in your region and teach your children about what to look out for and what to do in case of a bite. This is an important backyard safety tip.
- For added pool safety, remove all toys from the pool when finished playing there. They can be very tempting for young children to reach for.
- Always wear sunscreen and insect repellent.
- If it is very hot outside, see to it that the children take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water.
- All yards with small children and pets should have a fence that surrounds the entire periphery. This will prevent your children from getting out when they should not, as well as keeping things like the neighbors' pets out. In fact, a fence is one of the best backyard safety products you can buy.
These are just a few of the backyard safety tips that are essential to make our homes much safer places for our children to play in and around. Many accidents happen each year that could have easily been prevented had more attention been paid to backyard safety and home safety. It is our responsibility to do everything in our power to avoid and eliminate all potential dangers.
