Fire Safety Products

Fire safety products are designed to keep your family safe in the event of a fire. You've heard of some of these fire safety products but you might not have heard of others.

Fire Safety Products

There are fire safety products that are essential to every home. In fact, some are required by law. Fire extinguishers and smoke alarms are two of the most important home safety products you can buy. Since they keep your family safe, they could even be called child safety products. (Okay, that's a stretch.)

Getting Out Safely

Nearly all new homes built today are required to have certain fire safety products like smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. You probably already know why you should have a smoke detector in your house, but do you know how many you should have and where they should be? At the minimum, you should have one smoke alarm on each floor of your house. At best, there should be one in each room and in hallways too.

In addition, there are fire safety products that most people don't have, or haven't even heard of that are imperative if you have bedrooms on the second floor. They are fire escape ladders, and one should be in every bedroom on upper floors. Remember, if your bedroom door is closed and a smoke alarm is going off, you should feel the door before you open it. If it's warm, chances are the fire could be right outside the door and if you open it, you're opening yourself up to the potential of even more danger. But if you have a fire escape ladder in the bedroom, you can open the window, hook the ladder up to it and exit that way.

Putting it Out

In general, fire extinguishers are usually only necessary in the kitchen or the garage. These are the two areas most prone to fires. Of course, if you have a fireplace that you use a lot, it doesn't hurt to have one near the fireplace. But having a fire extinguisher and knowing how to use it are two different things. Since fire extinguishers are fire safety products that have different formulations depending on the type of fire it's being used for, make sure you're using the right one. Also, make sure you know how to use it. The last thing you want to do is be fumbling around with instructions when there's a fire.

If you live in something other than a single family home (such as a townhouse, a condo, an apartment or a duplex) it's a good idea that each unit has a fire sprinkler system in each room. That way, if there's a fire, the sprinkler system would help to contain the fire to minimize damage not only to your unit, but to other units as well. These fire safety products are actually good for any home.

On a Related Note...

If you don't have a carbon monoxide detector in your home, you might want to get one. More and more we hear of entire families dying or being severely ill due to carbon monoxide poisoning. This is especially true in older homes. Since carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas, you don't know if you're being affected by it until it's too late. But a carbon monoxide detector senses the presence of this gas and alerts you. This is why it's such an important safety product for your home.

Hopefully this page has made you think about the safety products you do or don't have in your house. Get what you need to keep your place safe.
